Ahh, one of the dirty little secrets not only of innovation, but of just about any group interaction where the number of people involved is greater than one. (And in some cases, even one is a crowd.)

Everyone has an agenda. Everyone. There are no exceptions. No one has your own individual interests more at heart than you do, no matter what the endeavor. Even in purely altruistic activities, there is a very human motivation by altruistic people that satisfyies some pleasure response in their brains.

Recently I was reading an article about the impact of the "lizard brain" on innovation, and I think you've hit upon that very response in your article here.

I might offer as a corollary to your advice (especially to innovation practitioners) that at our core, human beings will always think and act on instinct when faced with new situations, if even for the initial second or two.

Innovation can't simply be good strategy. It has to show a perceived path to (better) survival for all involved. It's a huge challenge, but recognizing this challenge from the beginning of any transformation greatly improves the likelihood of success.

Thanks for the comments, Jim. The retilian brian thing has been making its rounds. Seth Godin blogged on it recently. At this year's FEI Boston, Dr. G Clotraire Rapaille, author of "The Culture Code: An Ingenious Way To Understand Why People Around The World Live and Buy As They Do," gave a very interesting keynote talk on the topic of innovation, the three brains, and the concept of being "on code" with innovation. Understanding the place of all three brains (reptilian, limbic, and cortex) can be very useful in analyzing behaviors.
