Good post. I agree that helping innovation workers leverage each other is extremely important. However, I think IT tools are not the key factor in achieving that. The culture within an organization is the most important aspect I think. I wrote a blogpost on the way that Google organizes for innovation: http://www.innovationfactory.nl/blog/2009/02/09/innovate-the-google-way/ I found the book "The Google Story" very inspiring on this cultural level.

Culture is definitely important. But culture must be supported. New information technologies allow capability to connect workers in ways previously not possible. It is foolish to leave worker interaction and knowledge leverage to chance. In 3M, individual innovation projects were not left to chance. All needed a case of business relevance behind them. In the case of Google, current indications are that Google is trimming back on the policy of the past -- clear sign that it was not an efficient mechanism to drive sustainable innovation. People need to stop admiring practices just because they sound cool, and focus instead on the core issues of innovation skill development, strong cultural support, and knowledge networking.
